Bill Maher defends Cheryl Hines, despite criticism for staying with her husband, RFK Jr.

Over the past year, actress and comedian Cheryl Hines has been in the news more for her marriage to former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. than for her work on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” where her reputation took a hit for standing by her bear-dumping, conspiracy-theory-spreading, Donald Trump-supporting husband. But at least she has Bill Maher on her side.

In a segment on “Real Time” this week, Maher lashed out at critics of Hines, calling them “obnoxious posers” for — in his eyes — essentially throwing the actress into the flames for not ending her marriage over conflicting political beliefs, even though she herself had hinted in previous interviews that Kennedy’s support for Trump would be a breaking point for her.

After his endorsement of Trump, Kennedy spoke out about his wife’s “trepidation” about it, telling TMZ, “This is the opposite of what she would want to do. She went along with it because she loves me and she wanted to support me, but it was not something she ever encouraged.” And it’s that level of loyalty that Maher is apparently defending.

“His wife is Cheryl Hines, who Larry David described as ‘the best person I’ve ever met, the only person in Hollywood who doesn’t have an enemy,'” Maher said. “Well, now she does… because she didn’t throw her husband under the bus when her husband made a decision about something she clearly didn’t agree with… You want to know why I hate the left more than I used to? It’s such shit. There’s an ugliness to it that they never used to have. The liberals I respected as a kid weren’t like that. Going after the woman, even the Mafia doesn’t do that.”
