Bill Maher Defends Cheryl Hines Against Critics After RFK Jr. Endorses Trump

Bill Maher is standing up for Cheryl Hines as she continues to face criticism over her husband Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to support Donald Trump for president.

While the comedian made it clear in the latest episode of HBO’s Real time that he “couldn’t support” RFK Jr.’s campaign for the White House, he criticized those who criticized Hines on social media for supporting her husband.

“His wife is Cheryl Hines, who Larry David described as ‘the best person I’ve ever met, the only person in Hollywood who doesn’t have an enemy,'” Maher said. “Well, now she does … because she didn’t throw her husband under the bus when her husband made a decision about something that she clearly didn’t agree with.”

Hines has indicated she does not support Trump and his third presidential bid, with RFK Jr. saying TMZ last month that his wife is “a lifelong Democrat.”

Maher went on to criticize “the obnoxious poseurs of the aforementioned far left,” for recent hateful tweets directed at the Curb your enthusiasm actress. This included actor Bradley Whitford’s comment on X (formerly Twitter), in which he chided Hines for remaining silent while everything unfolded. “Way to remain silent while your insane husband throws his support behind the convicted rapist who brags about depriving women of their basic rights,” Whitford wrote in his post.

“Well, you know what I don’t think is bold? Explaining to a woman — but not to her face, of course — how to sacrifice her marriage so you can read something on Twitter that you approve of,” Maher said in response. “You want to know why I hate the left more than I used to? It’s this kind of shit. There’s an ugliness that they never had before. The liberals I respected as a kid weren’t like that. Going after women, even the mafia don’t do that.”

The presenter added: “In theory, liberals are sympathetic. In practice, this man can’t even understand one of the most basic dilemmas that all humans share: that sometimes you have to swallow some shit when you’re married.”

In August, RFK Jr. suspended his presidential campaign and endorsed GOP candidate Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance.
