Hector Bravo, a former prison guard with 16 years of service, revealed a violent episode involving the Mexican Mafia. According to Bravo, an overly intimate relationship between a captain and a member of the Mexican Mafia led to the stabbing of multiple prison guards. The incident nearly resulted in the death of a police officer, prompting a crisis response from Bravo, who at the time was serving as both a crisis response team commander and public relations officer. Bravo reported that the incident was subsequently covered up by the prison guard. The whistle was blown by an assistant guard who sent an email to the entire state, only to retire immediately afterward. The attempt to downplay the incident exposed systemic corruption reaching Sacramento. Troubled by the cover-up and its implications, Bravo chose to retire, putting the well-being of his family ahead of his career.
