Connecticut man airlifted with serious injuries after crash on Route 85 in Salem

SALEM — An Old Lyme man was flown to the hospital by helicopter after the car he was driving crashed into a brick wall and a tree on Route 85 Friday, Connecticut State Police said.

State police said in an incident report that the 51-year-old man was making a slight “S” turn when he lost control of his vehicle and drove off the right shoulder, striking the stone wall and a tree. The vehicle, a 2015 Jeep Wrangler, began to roll over and the man, who was the sole occupant, was ejected, the report said.

The man suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to Hartford Hospital by LifeStar, an intensive care helicopter, police said.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Sullivan Road, according to police. Police said they were called to the scene around 5:25 p.m. and closed the road for investigation. The state Department of Transportation said the road reopened around 7:35 p.m.
