Arrest made in connection with murder of Dedra Simmons in Topeka

Topeka police said they arrested a man Friday in connection with the murder of a woman in downtown Topeka that morning.

Demetris Terrill Gadson, 32, has been arrested in connection with crimes related to the death of Dedra L. Simmons, 38, of Topeka, said Topeka Police Lt. Ronnie Connell.

Police were called around 6 a.m. Friday to a report of a domestic dispute in the 1300 block of SW Western Avenue, where they found Simmons with life-threatening injuries, Connell said.

Simmons was taken to a hospital in Topeka, where she later died, Connell said.

Gadson was booked into the Shawnee County Jail at 5:25 p.m. Friday, where he was being held without bail on charges of second-degree murder, aggravated assault and animal cruelty, jail records show.

Jail records show Gadson was also being held on a parole violation.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Gadson was released on Aug. 7 from El Dorado Correctional Facility, where he was serving time on Sedgwick County convictions for two counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of aggravated burglary.

Simmons was the tenth murder victim in Topeka this year.

No further details were released.
