Rick Springfield to headline Shellabration | News, Sports, Jobs

The musical story of “Jesse’s girl” will echo throughout downtown Fort Dodge on Friday as Rick Springfield takes the stage for this year’s Shellabration concert.

The Babys, a British band popular from 1977 to 1980, took the stage before Springfield, a Grammy Award-winning singer.

The show will be opened by a local favorite: Tank Anthony Band.

For the first time, Shellabration will take place at the intersection of Central Avenue and Ninth Street, which is also the site of the Downtown Country Jam.

“We are excited to move it to the city center,” said Craig Schlienz, a member of the board of directors of Shellabration Inc., which organizes both major concerts.

The Babies

“It’s a nice atmosphere,” he said.

According to him, downtown Fort Dodge offers a “natural background” for live music.

He admitted that setting up and breaking down a concert downtown is easier than at the Oleson Park Bandshell or the Harlan and Hazel Rogers Sports Complex.

Shellabration’s summer concert has long been a showcase for classic rock. Shellabration President Jim Reed described this year’s show as a “our triumphant return to the 80s.”

“If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that Fort Dodge loves its ’80s artists,” he said.

Rick Springfield

Springfield broke onto the American music scene in 1981 with the number 1 hit “Jesse’s girl.”

That year he won the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

His string of hits continued with “I did everything for you,” “Don’t talk to strangers,” “Affair of the heart,” And “To love Somebody.”

In the 80s he had 17 Top 40 hits.

His music career began in his native Australia with a band called Zoot, in which he played from 1969 to 1971. He then went solo. In 1972 he had a Top 10 hit in Australia with “Speak to the heavens.”

Springfield is perhaps just as well known for his acting career. He played Dr. Noah Drake in “General Hospital.” He also appeared on “The Six Million Dollar Man,” “High tide,” “The Rockford Files,” And “The Incredible Hulk.”

The Babies

This band is perhaps best known for “Isn’t it time?”

Other hits by The Babys include “Every time I think of you,” “Head first,” “Back on my feet,” And “Midnight meeting.”

The band broke up in 1981. In 2013, the band got back together and since then, the band has only played a few shows.

Reed said the band played in Iowa five times in the 1970s and early 1980s. He said they have never performed in Iowa since reuniting in 2013.
