A 16-year-old girl is dead after she was shot outside an apartment complex near 7e Avenue and Alta Vista Road, Phoenix police said.

Yadira Duarte Rodriguez died in hospital after the shooting that took place just before 7:30 p.m. on July 17.

Later that night, two other victims with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds drove to a hospital and provided information “connecting them to the shooting on Alta Vista Road,” police said.

Preliminary information from detectives indicates the man and woman arrived at the apartment complex in a vehicle to meet Rodriguez. He got into their vehicle, pulled a gun and attempted to rob them, according to a Phoenix Police Department news release.

The woman then struggled with Rodriguez over the gun. Sometime during the struggle, the man gained access to a gun and shot Rodriguez, police said, adding that both the man and woman were struck by gunfire during the shooting.

They pulled Rodriguez from the vehicle and drove away, the news release said.

The man and woman were released after detectives consulted with the Maricopa County Prosecutor’s Office. A decision on charges will be made once the investigation is complete, police said.
