Chief Jason Cokinos of the Montgomery County Police Department’s 3rd Precinct (Silver Spring) shared the news of a shoplifting and assault suspect who was tracked by a police drone and subsequently arrested. “As the saying goes… You can run, but you can’t hide!” said Cokinos.

According to Cokinos, “Drone as First Responder (DFR) “RAVEN 1” began rapidly tracking a fleeing shoplifting and assault suspect in downtown Silver Spring. The suspect jumped a fence and hid in the backyard of a residence. RAVEN led officers from the 3rd Precinct inside to apprehend the suspect. The suspect was transported to our central processing and booked.”

This is the second arrest in as many days in which the police drone has assisted, as Cokinos shared Friday: “Officers were alerted by a license plate reader to a stolen vehicle entering Silver Spring from Washington, DC and followed suspects downtown after abandoning the stolen vehicle. The drone allowed officers to take their time and create a safe arrest plan.”

According to police, the Drone as First Responder program uses Raven’s capabilities to reach the scene of a call for service, either ahead of or in conjunction with patrol officers. This innovative approach aims to revolutionize emergency response by providing a real-time aerial perspective and strategic insights.

Raven’s operational objectives include:

  • Assist in assessing the situation and circumstances before officers arrive on scene.
  • Providing essential tactical information and situational awareness to enhance the safety of the response.
  • Contribute to de-escalating situations and improving overall response times.
  • Addressing staff shortages and supporting public safety.”
