Los Angeles Angels have drafted the son of the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians legend

The Los Angeles Angels will soon have the next generation of one of the best hitters in MLB of the past 50 years in their farm system.

Unfortunately, this is another disappointing season for the Los Angeles Angels. They enter the second half of the season with a 41-56 record. Only the Oakland Athletics and Chicago White Sox prevent them from achieving the worst record in the American League.

That’s why they’ll be sellers ahead of the July 30 trade deadline and are already looking ahead to 2025. The strategy of building for the future continued last week with the annual MLB Draft, and the Angels made a 17th-round selection that turned heads.

With the 502nd overall pick in the 2024 draft, the Los Angeles Angels took high school prospect Lucas Ramirez. The product of Florida’s American Heritage School is the son of Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Guardians (the Indians when he was there) great Manny Ramirez.

The 18-year-old prospect plays outfield and first base and committed to play for Tennessee last year, but rumor has it he’s likely to pass on that opportunity and opt to head to the Angeles minor leagues this year.

His father was one of the best hitters baseball has seen in the last 40 years. He finished his career with a .312 batting average. His peak came in 2002 when he hit .349 for the Red Sox. He hit 25 or more home runs 13 times, including five seasons with 40 or more home runs.

The elder Ramirez was a key part of the Red Sox title teams in 2004 and 2007. He was also a controversial figure, often linked to steroid use during his prime. He tested positive for PEDS in 2009.
