Seven Michigan State football transfers who still don’t have a home

The transfer portal is a giver, but it also takes away. While some players leave for greener pastures, others are stuck in the mud, left without the suitors they thought they would get when they made the move.

Seven Spartans who made the move didn’t find the greener pastures they were looking for, and were left without a new place to call home before fall camp began in a few weeks.

See which Spartans still don’t have a home base before the start of the new season that is just around the corner:

Jalen Berger

Michigan State’s Jalen Berger runs for the win against Indiana during the second quarter on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

This one comes as a bit of a surprise. While I don’t think Berger is an all-conference back, he is someone who can contribute, if not be a bell cow at the five-man level.

Davion Primm

Michigan State’s Davion Primm runs with the ball during the Spring Showcase on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

The Oak Park native, Primm spent time at MSU and paid his dues, but it never really worked out. He could be a very good addition for a MAC school looking for a receiving threat out of the backfield.

Sean Brown

Michigan State defensive backs Marqui Lowery (left) and Sean Brown run through a drill during football practice on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2023, in East Lansing.

After spending his freshman year in East Lansing, the California native has moved on, but the defenseman has yet to find a new home.

Marquise Lowery

Michigan State’s Marqui Lowery Jr. (right) tackles Washington’s Rome Odunze after a catch in the second quarter on Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

Lowery was a solid cornerback when healthy at Michigan State, and he’s another who could certainly find a role in a defensive backfield, though injuries have always hampered him.

Another example of an injury where a player gets hurt. Gaoteote is a bit too slow to really be effective at the power conference level, but the linebacker is a solid addition when he is fit.

Jaelon Barbarin

Michigan State running back Jaelon Barbarin runs with the ball during the opening day of MSU’s fall football camp on Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, in East Lansing.

Barbarin has struggled with off-field issues, and that could still bother him now, but the running back has speed and skill that could benefit another program.

Quavian Driver

Michigan State’s Quavian Carter (left) approaches Minnesota’s Quentin Redding during the first quarter on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

Another example of an injury: Carter was badly injured in East Lansing.
