Waukee plans to upgrade Centennial Park’s main playground this fall

Waukee plans to update the main playground at one of its larger parks this fall to accommodate more children and provide more shade.

Waukee City Council members unanimously approved a bid of nearly $650,000 on July 15 to purchase playground equipment, paving and other amenities for Centennial Park’s nearly 25-year-old central playground.

City spokeswoman Heather Behrens later told the Des Moines Register in an email that “the new design has many different pieces that are appropriate for different ages. It also includes plenty of shade, which is a common request from residents.”

Matt Jermier, the city’s parks and recreation director, told council members that the shade structures will be made of canvas and will remain up year-round.

Jermier said construction is expected to begin around September 1 and be completed around October 1.

Behrens added that the smaller playground in the park, near the baseball fields, which is currently mainly popular with younger children between the ages of 2 and 5, will also be removed and incorporated into the main playground features rather than replaced.

The park’s current third playground will remain, she said.
