Fire damages Krispy Kreme in Clive; long-term closure expected

A fire at the Krispy Kreme store in Clive on Saturday night caused severe smoke damage throughout the building, and is expected to keep the store closed for an extended period, according to the Clive Fire Department.

The Clive store supplies doughnuts to the two other Metro Krispy Kreme stores, in Ankeny and West Des Moines, the Register previously reported. A person who answered the phone at the West Des Moines store on Sunday said it was closed but would reopen once an alternate source was found.

The Clive Fire Department responded to the fire at 1880 NW 46th St. around 11:09 p.m. and found “a heavy fire in the kitchen,” according to a statement from Clive Fire Chief Blake Boyle. Crews from Urbandale and Windsor Heights also responded.

The main fire was quickly extinguished, but firefighters worked for about two hours to ventilate the building and prevent the fire from re-igniting, the release said. The worst damage to the fire was in the kitchen, the cause of which is still under investigation.

The Clive store, which opened in 1999, was the first Krispy Kreme in Iowa, according to Register archives. It was slated to become the first of three Iowa locations that year, but it wouldn’t be until 2018 that a second store opened in Ankeny. A third store opened in Council Bluffs in 2014, completing the trifecta, and a fourth opened last year in West Des Moines.
