What YA’s Reading: Delicious Fiction

When we think of books about food, we usually think of cookbooks. However, there are also many great fiction books about food. Here are a few of my favorites.

With the fire high by Elizabeth Acevedo

book cover teenage girl surrounded by herbs and fruitsWhen Emoni cooks, she can relax and turn food into pure magic. However, she has a lot of responsibilities on her plate: school, raising her 2-year-old daughter, and arranging visits from her ex-boyfriend to their daughter. Can she keep dreaming of working in a real kitchen one day?

I highly recommend this heartfelt story that made me feel Emoni’s struggles and successes. She is a character you will think about long after you finish the book.

“With the Fire on High is a worthy follow-up to Acevedo’s nationally acclaimed debut. Emoni’s dogged persistence is inspiring. Acevedo’s clever imagery and explorations of language and culture make the journey not only beautiful but also thought-provoking.” — Entertainment Weekly

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

book cover thorns and rosesIn this imaginative makeover of the Red Queen from Alice in Wonderland You follow Cath as she tries to realize her dream of opening a bakery to sell her cakes. This is an even bigger challenge, since she is to become the next queen. When she meets the beautiful and mysterious court joker Jest, her life is turned upside down.

“The author’s best fantasy to date. . . . Meyer has woven together all the elements of darkness and light, fate and free will, and love and hate into an unforgettable tale of the Red Queen’s evolution from a young girl who dreamed of true love and freedom to a madwoman best remembered for the phrase, ‘Off with his head.’ If you only read one broken fairy tale this year, make it Heartless. A must-have title.” ―School library magazine

Melt with you by Jennifer Dugan

book cover two teenage girls sitting on top of a food truckFallon and Chloe were best friends. Then they started dating. Now they haven’t spoken since last summer, when Fallon left for college and Chloe stayed to finish her senior year of high school. Fallon is back for the summer and wants to avoid the humiliation of running into Chloe at all costs, even though she loves her.

Unfortunately, Fallon and Chloe’s moms co-own an ice cream truck and need the girls to drive it across the country to a food truck festival. Get ready for awkward conversations, misunderstandings, an entertaining road trip, and hopefully a restored relationship—at least friends, if not more.

“Dugan’s easygoing tale of friends becoming lovers effectively captures the blossoming summer romance and reminds us that ‘what seems like a mistake can sometimes be the most fun you’ve ever had.’” —Publishers Weekly
