Firefighter sent to hospital from blaze in Hartford home

HARTFORD — A firefighter was sent to the hospital Sunday from a blaze on the porch of a three-story, multi-family home on Madison Street. The American Red Cross is helping six people who lived in the home find housing, fire officials said, and no injuries were reported.

Around 6:30 pm Sunday, Hartford fire companies responded to a report of a fire on Madison Street. When they arrived, they saw a working fire on the second floor porch of a three-story brick, occupied, multi-family home, said Mario Oquendo, of the Hartford Fire Department.

A family who lived on the second floor was at home at the time of the fire. The family made it out of the home safely, he said.

The fire, which extended to the third floor porches and roof area, was quickly extinguished and is now under control, Oquendo said.

While no people or firefighter injuries were reported, one firefighter was sent to a local hospital for evaluation for possible hypertension, he said.

The Hartford Fire Department’s Special Services Unit is working with the American Red Cross to provide relocation assistance to three families, made up of six adults, Oquendo said.

The fire is under investigation by the fire marshal’s office, he said.
