ATP Atlanta Day 1 Predictions Including Shapovalov vs Goffin

The ATP Tour returned to American soil with Marcos Giron winning the Newport title on Sunday. This week, the action moves south to Atlanta, Georgia for the 250-level ATP Atlanta Open. While many of the top players are in Paris for the 2024 Olympics, Atlanta still has an intriguing field with plenty of top 50 players. The action gets underway on Monday with three main matches, including Denis Shapovalov vs. David Goffin. As always, we at LWOT have the preview and prediction for the day’s action. But who will advance to the second round?

ATP Atlanta Day 1 Predictions

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs. Arthur Cazaux

One on one: first meeting

Fifth-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina comes to Atlanta looking to get back on track after a mixed first seven months of his season. He was closing in on the top 20 last August. The 25-year-old Spaniard is currently ranked No. 41 in the world and hasn’t won a double since February. Fortunately for Davidovich Fokina, his opponent, Arthur Cazaux, is struggling even more than he has this season. The 21-year-old Frenchman is 2-10 since early March. Davidovich Fokina has too many weapons to lose this match.

Yoshihito Nishioka vs. Zachary Svajda

One on one: first meeting

American Zachary Svajda has made it to ATP Atlanta after two qualifying rounds. The 21-year-old has a career-high ranking of World No. 113 and has shown signs of top-50 potential this season. It has been a tough start to the season for Yoshihito Nishioka, who went 7-15 from early February to late May. He is now 6-3 since then with three top-100 wins. Svajda will have the support of the home crowd, but Nishioka is tough to play on hard courts.

Denis Shapovalov vs David Goffin

One on one: 1-1

Denis Shapovalov and David Goffin split their previous two meetings, although this will be their first clash in almost four years. Goffin, 33, refuses to back down, winning the Ilkley Challenger event last month. Shapovalov, a former world No. 10, has shown the last flashes of his top form. The 25-year-old Canadian has two top-30 wins in the past two months and pushed Ben Shelton to five sets at Wimbledon. I believe Shapovalov is a shrewd contender at ATP Atlanta.

Prediction: Shapovalov in 2
