Court sends groom, 11 others to jail for murder of female police inspector

A Rivers State court in Port Harcourt has ordered the detention of 12 people in connection with the death of a police officer.

The suspects are suspected of involvement in the murder of police inspector Christiana Erekere.

Inspector Erekere was reportedly killed in Taaba community in Khana Local Government Area of ​​Rivers State.

She met her end on April 25, 2024, while at a police checkpoint checking people on their way to Akwa-Ibom State for a wedding ceremony.

According to reports, the trouble started when a police team questioned the authenticity of the documents of one of the cars the suspects were travelling in. This led to a mass action that resulted in the death of the suspect.

The suspects include the grooms identified as Efeoghene Uwheraka, Joy Uwhereka, Shirley Wealth, Napoleon Uwhereka, Ejiro Ejogbamu, Moses Agege and Precious Iyota.

Others include Kikelomo Odusanya, Wealth Ojoh, Ighofose Oke, Blessing Ovie and Emeka Joshua.

The twelve suspects have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them.

The trial judge, Justice Augusta Chukwu, dismissed the bail applications filed by the suspects’ lawyers and adjourned the case to October 8 for an expedited hearing.
