Utah State CB drowns

Utah State cornerback Andre Seldon Jr. died Saturday in an apparent drowning at Porcupine Reservoir, according to the school. A search began Saturday afternoon after callers reported that a young man seen diving from cliffs at the reservoir did not resurface, the Cache County Sheriff’s Office said. His body was recovered by a dive team at around 9:05 pm Seldon joined the Utah State football program this summer after transferring from New Mexico State, where he played the past two seasons under Nate Dreiling, Utah State’s interim head coach and defensive coordinator. Before that, he spent two seasons at Michigan. Dreiling was promoted earlier this month after Utah State fired Blake Anderson. Seldon appeared in 15 games last season for New Mexico State, recording 36 tackles, seven pass breakups and an interception.

LSU cornerback arrested

LSU sophomore cornerback Javien Toviano surrendered to authorities Sunday on charges of video voyeurism, the East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s office said. Toviano, 19, of Arlington, Texas, is accused of recording himself having sex with a woman without her consent, according to an arrest warrant. The woman told detectives she found videos of the two on Toviano’s iPad that were recorded through a clock with a built-in camera placed near the bed, The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate reported. The woman told detectives that Toviano had recorded them having sex in the past without her consent and she told him she did not want to be recorded.

Packers, DT reach deal

Three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark and the Green Bay Packers have agreed on a $64 million, three-year contract extension, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn’t been signed, said Clark will make $29 million this year, including a $17.5 million signing bonus. Clark, who turns 29 on Oct. 4, was entering the final season of his contract after agreeing to a four-year, $70 million extension with a $25 million signing bonus in the summer of 2020.

Piastri earns first F1 victory

Australian driver Oscar Piastri won his first Formula One race after teammate Lando Norris handed him back the lead to complete a McLaren one-two at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday. That outstanding result came after a long and at times awkward back-and-forth between the British team and its top driver before Norris finally obeyed orders to let Piastri back in front. Piastri started second behind pole-sitting Norris and beat him to the first turn. Norris then got ahead after a pit-stop strategy that favored him despite being behind his teammate, but he eventually listed to team orders and let Piastri take the victory. Lewis Hamilton finished third behind the papaya-colored pair for his record-extending 200th career podium.

Herta Cruises in Toronto

Colton Herta won Indy Toronto on Sunday for his first victory of the year, starting from the pole and maintaining control throughout the chaotic race at Exhibition Place. The 24-year-old American raced to his eighth career victory and first in more than two years. He completed the first weekend sweep in IndyCar history, posting the fastest times in both practices, qualifying and Sunday’s warmup before winning the race. Andretti Global teammate Kyle Kirkwood finished second on the street course, followed by four-time Toronto champion Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing. The race was the first street event for the hybrid powertrains introduced two weeks ago on the road course at Mid-Ohio. Series leader Alex Palou was fourth after starting 18th following a penalty for interference in qualifying.

Mobley agrees to extension

Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley has agreed to a five-year, $224 million contract extension with Cleveland, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. Mobley has blossomed into one of the NBA’s brightest young stars since being drafted with the No. 3 overall pick in 2021. The 23-year-old’s new deal could be worth up to $269 million if he reaches incentives, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because terms have not been finalized.

Wannasaen edges Ryu

Chanettee Wannasaen won the Dana Open for her second LPGA Tour title, birdieing the final two holes to hold off Haeran Ryu by a stroke. Three strokes ahead of playing partner Ryu entering the round, Wannasaen closed with a 4-under 67 to finish at 20-under 264 at Highland Meadows in Sylvania, Ohio. Ryu shot 65, also birdieing the final two holes. Defending champion Linn Grant of Sweden and Ssu-Chia Cheng of Taiwan tied for third at 14 under, each shooting 68. Former University of Arkansas golfer Stacy Lewis posted a 70 on Sunday and finished in a tie for seventh at 10-under 274. Gaby Lopez (Razorbacks) struggled with a 75 and finished at 1-under 283.

Dunlap earns 1st pro win

Nick Dunlap became the first player in PGA Tour history to win as an amateur and a professional in the same year, rallying Sunday for a two-point victory in the Barracuda Championship. In January at The American Express in La Quinta, the 20-year-old Dunlap — then a sophomore at the University of Alabama — became the eighth amateur to win a tour event and the first in 33 years. He turned professional days later. On Sunday at Tahoe Mountain Club in the only PGA Tour event that uses the modified Stableford scoring system, Dunlap took the lead with a 55-foot eagle putt on the par-5 15th.
