ATP Review: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Starts Strong in Atlanta

Fifth-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina produced a 30-game winning streak to secure a 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory over Frenchman Arthur Cazaux in the opening round of the Atlanta Open on Monday.

Davidovich Fokina had an 11-8 lead in aces and saved all five break points he faced on his way up. Cazaux made 16 unforced errors, two fewer than Davidovich Fokina, to go with 15 winners.

Belgium’s David Goffin won 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, and Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka won 7-6 (4), 6-3 against Zachary Svajda.

General Open

Eighth-seeded Serb Laslo Djere defeated Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva 7-6 (6), 6-3 in the opening round in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Djere had a 6-2 lead in aces and converted 3 of the 4 break points. Djere now faces Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild, who won 6-2, 7-6 (6) against Austrian Joel Schwaerzler.

In other matches, Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann defeated Spain’s Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-4; India’s Sumit Nagal defeated Slovakia’s Lukas Klein 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3); and Nicolas Moreno De Alboran defeated Argentina’s Andrea Collarini 6-4, 6-4.

Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag

Flavio Cobolli opened a 16-5 lead in the winners’ standings after a 6-2, 6-3 first-round win over Argentine Mariano Navone in Umag.

Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro came back for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over seventh-seeded Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic. Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego won a wild third-set tiebreaker to claim a 6-2, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (9) victory over Croatia’s Mili Poljicak. Sonego saved two match points.

In other matches, Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic defeated Austria’s Filip Misolic 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while Czech Republic’s Jakub Mensik beat Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2. Croatia’s Matej Dodig also recovered to beat France’s Enzo Couacaud 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Marco Trungelliti defeated Guido Andreozzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in a battle of players from Argentina.
