TRANSLATION:

Good morning, it is Tuesday, July 23, 2024 and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief, presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

There’s no time for chitchat this morning. We’ve got a bunch of news and some fun giveaways, so shall we?

On March 13, 2024, officers from the Annapolis Police Department and members of UFCW Local 400 met with city officials to discuss concerns about waste and mismanagement within the department. Despite the protections under Maryland law for releasing such information, Chief Edward Jackson suspended two officers on July 18, 2024, for allegedly disparaging the department, himself, and Major Brandford during a meeting with the mayor. UFCW Local 400 condemned the suspensions as retaliation and called for the officers to be reinstated and Chief Jackson to be fired. An investigation has been launched by the Baltimore Police Department, which the union claims is a conflict of interest. The conflict is that all of the officers in Annapolis are from Baltimore. Mayor Gavin Buckley stressed the importance of integrity in policing and noted that an independent process is underway to address potential internal policy violations. We also conducted a completely unscientific poll and the last time I looked, over 80% of respondents had NO confidence in the leadership of the Annapolis Police Department.

In the hospital wars, not to be outdone by AAMC, the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center has been ranked #5 in Maryland and the Baltimore Metro area by U.S. News & World Report for 2024-2025. The hospital earned high performance ratings for eight procedures, including COPD and heart attack care. CEO Kathy McCollum attributed the success to the dedicated medical staff, saying, “These rankings reflect our team’s unwavering commitment to providing high-quality, compassionate care to our patients, their families and everyone we serve.” The U.S. News rankings are designed to help patients make informed decisions about their health care, with only eight of the more than 60 Maryland hospitals evaluated meeting the high standards.

AMFM will host “In The Vane Of Pink Floyd” at Rams Head On Stage on Monday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. Local artists will perform one Pink Floyd song and one original song inspired by the band. Performers so far include Dave Tieff, Aidan Ewald, Mozaic, The Natty Bohs, Danah Denice, Doug Segree and more. Tickets are $30, with proceeds benefiting the Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians. Tickets are available at RamsHeadOnStage.com

Major League Soccer is coming to Annapolis. Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers, also known as Wolves, will play at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis on Wednesday, July 31 at 8 p.m. as part of the Stateside Cup tour. Mayor Gavin Buckley expressed excitement about the event and hoped it would boost local interest in soccer. He said, “We are grateful that the Premier League has chosen Annapolis as one of the venues for the Stateside Cup.” The Premier League features 20 teams competing for the top spots and has a global TV audience of more than 4 billion people. Tickets for the match can be purchased online. For more information, visit statesidecup.com.

Tickets are now on sale for the 79th annual Crab Feast, hosted by the Rotary Club of Annapolis, on Friday, August 2 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The event will welcome more than 1,000 guests for an evening of all-you-can-eat crabs, corn on the cob, and other delicacies. The Crab Feast is a major fundraiser, with last year’s event raising $50,000 for local charities. Tickets and raffle tickets can be purchased online through July 29. And as we begin to wrap up, today is Ticket Tuesday – and we’re adding one more thing to the mix. Today I have a pair of tickets from Rams Head On Stage to see one of the greatest female guitarists ever – Orianthi, on July 30th – she was handpicked by Michael Jackson for what was to be his next tour before his death. She is, in a word, amazing! And I also have a pair of tickets to see the fantastic comedian we spoke to a week ago – Tom Papa. He’s at Maryland Hall on August 2nd! And of course, check out RamsHeadOnStage.com for some great shows on the schedule. And finally, as I said… the Annapolis Rotary Crab Feast is also coming up on August 2nd, and I have a pair of tickets for that too! So if you want Orianthi on July 30th or Papa of Crabs on July 2nd, get in touch and we’ll see if we can make it happen!

Okay, that’s it, but first a quick thank you to you for listening and sharing and letting your friends and colleagues know about us. And to our sponsors for the Daily News Brief – Annapolis Subaru, the SPCA of Anne Arundel County, Solar Energy Services, and Hospice of the Chesapeake.
