Nicole Kidman Believes Stanley Kubrick Sabotaged Her Marriage to Tom Cruise for ‘Eyes Wide Shut’

Nicole Kidman believes Stanley Kubrick meticulously ‘mined’ her marriage to Tom Cruise as an inspiration while working on his film, Eyes wide closed.

The Oscar-winning actress, now 57, co-starred with Tom, 62, in the 1999 film, playing Dr. Bill Hartford’s wife, a role Tom originated. The plot twist comes when she tells him she fantasizes about having a relationship with another man, leading him into a dark world of orgies and rituals performed by the elite and powerful.

Nicole married Tom nine years before the film’s release and they divorced in 2001. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times To celebrate the film’s 25th anniversary, she discussed whether Stanley drew on their marriage for the project. She replied, “I think so. There were ideas that intrigued him; he asked a lot of questions. But he had a strong vision for the story he was telling. I remember him saying, ‘Triangles are hard. You have to be careful with a triangle, because one person can feel overwhelmed.’ But he knew how to handle us.”

She stressed that she never felt “overwhelmed” because she and Tom had different relationships with Stanley. “There’s also something about being a woman in that equation. Stanley loved women and he had a different dynamic with Tom. They worked more on his character,” she noted.

Fans have speculated that filming the intense scenes, which delved deeper into the couple’s complex dynamics, put a strain on the stars’ marriage. Nicole revealed that they spent weeks filming a provocative scene that was ultimately cut from the film.

She said: “It was the scene where Tom and I start smoking a joint in bed, and I’m laughing and doing this long monologue. It took us many weeks. A lot of it was rehearsing in the bedroom, and Tom wasn’t happy with what we had done. So we reworked it, building it up as we went. There was no rush. Stanley never went over budget; he bought time. Tom and I started working with Stanley in his house, and we didn’t even go to the Pinewood sets. Six to eight weeks went by, and we were asking ourselves, ‘Are we ever going to start?’ It just never happened. We felt comfortable enough with each other to share ideas. For that scene, we improvised the beginning in rehearsals.”

At release, Eyes wide closed received mixed reviews from critics, but has since gained cult status. It marked Kubrick’s last film before his death on March 7, 1999, at the age of 70.
