Big Ten football championship to remain in Indianapolis through 2028 – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti announced Tuesday during Big Ten Football Media Days that the Big Ten Football Championships will be held in Indianapolis through 2028.

The game is still played at Lucas Oil Stadium, the only stadium to ever host the Big Ten football championships.

The first Big Ten football championship game was played in 2011.

This season marks the first time the Big Ten has had no divisions since the championship game began. The top two teams in the final regular-season standings play each other in Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship.

This also marks the first season of the expanded 12-team college football playoff series.

“The new expanded college football playoffs give more Big Ten teams the opportunity to compete for a national championship,” Petitti said.

Michigan defeated Iowa in last year’s championship and the Wolverines went on to become College Football Playoff champions.
