Historic Port Augusta Train Station for sale

A listed train station offers an exciting opportunity for developers looking for a

signature project to strengthen their credibility.

The original Port Augusta train station, at 101 Commercial Rd, has huge potential

to become a calling card for developers while revitalizing the southern end of the region

CBD of the city, says selling agent Craig Costello of Harris Real Estate.

“The uniqueness of the train station will certainly attract and challenge developers to think

about the potential they can unlock there,” Costello said.

“It could be the signature piece that they proudly put their name to.

“Anyone can renovate a symmetrical house that is a hundred years old, but this (train station)

definitely has a look and a presence that you can’t get anywhere else – and it would go over incredibly well.”

The historic building is for sale for the first time in 151 years.

The building consists of 10 main rooms.

The building is currently owned by the state government and is in need of renovation.

The train station, built in 1881, is located on a large plot of 7,150 m2, which is intended for

variety of applications.

While many local residents would love to see the site converted into senior housing, Costello says it could also be used for temporary or long-term housing, childcare or education facilities, office and consulting space, a hotel or a shopping centre.

A nearby 10,790m2 corner block, home to the Cooinda Club, a former meeting place for railway workers, is for sale through First National and could increase development potential.

“If someone bought both locations, you could demolish the Cooinda Club and you would have a huge lot on the street side,” Costello said.

“There is huge potential there and what is exciting about this piece of land, and also the

Cooinda Club, is that it offers a project developer the opportunity to really realize something big.”

Port Augusta Railway Station was built in the late 19th century and is a tribute to the golden age of rail travel.

The building is a beloved landmark in the community.

The station is located on a plot of over 7,000 m².

The train station, currently owned by the state government, was replaced by a new station when the transcontinental railroad was built in 1917.

The station was previously used as a hub for community groups and consists of ten rooms, one of which has a small kitchenette.

The approaching railway line is little used, because shunting trains pass over the Trans-

Australian line, says Mr Costello.

He says the station has a lot of character and appeal and only cosmetic repairs are needed to make it available for rent, creating a revenue stream while the remaining site is redeveloped.

The Upper Spencer Gulf is enjoying a wave of increased business activity, with significant

projects already underway, including a green cement plant in Port Augusta and a hydrogen plant

power station in Whyalla.

A community consultation has begun over a new hydrogen plant in Port Pirie, while the federal opposition has also identified Port Augusta as the site for a nuclear waste facility.

The deadline for submitting your interest is August 9.

No guide price has been disclosed, but Land Services SA records put the property’s value at $410,000.
