President Joe Biden will address the nation from the White House on Wednesday about next steps after ending his bid for a second term just four months before the election.

Biden, who will serve out the remainder of his term, said Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, that he plans to deliver a speech from the Oval Office at 8 p.m. “about what’s next and how I’m going to get the job done for the American people.”

It is the first time that the 81-year-old Biden has addressed the nation since announcing his abrupt withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race on Sunday. The decision came after critics criticized his performance during the June 27 debate and raised doubts about his fitness for office.

Biden quickly endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the 2024 presidential election. By Monday, Harris, 59, had garnered enough support to become the Democratic Party nominee.

Biden, who has been cooped up at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, tested negative for COVID-19 on Tuesday and his symptoms had “resolved,” according to a letter his doctor, Kevin O’Connor, posted on Tuesday. Biden returned to the White House on Tuesday after being seen leaving Dover Air Force Base earlier in the day. After his daily 3 p.m. briefing, Biden had no public events scheduled for Tuesday afternoon or evening.

Biden will appear from the Oval Office at the White House. He arrived at Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday afternoon after conducting presidential duties from his home in Delaware while recovering from COVID-19, which he tested positive for on July 17 while campaigning in Las Vegas. Oval Office speeches are rare for presidents, but Biden last appeared in the same setting on July 14, when he spoke about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump a day earlier.

Historically, the video feed of Oval Office speeches is available to all major media outlets. The speech will also be carried by major broadcast networks, which will likely break with regular programming to air Biden’s remarks live as he begins speaking. His speech will likely be streamed live on the White House website and other major news websites and streaming apps.
