Kentucky Board Revokes License of Doctor Accused of Failing to Detect Brain Tumor

A state commission has revoked the license of a doctor accused of failing to diagnose a brain tumor while working for a Kentucky hospital.

The Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure issued the injunction against Dr. Anand P. Lalaji on Monday.

Lalaji’s office is in Atlanta. He has a telemedicine practice and was first licensed in Kentucky in 2008, the board said.

Lalaji specializes in diagnostic radiology, which uses X-rays and CT scans, among other techniques, to diagnose a patient’s condition.

Kentucky regulators revoked Lalaji’s license in November 2023 after Mercy Health Lourdes, a hospital in Paducah, reported that he had been suspended over concerns that he misinterpreted images or misunderstood conditions in more than half a dozen cases.

In one case, Lalaji allegedly missed a brain tumor, according to a complaint from the licensing committee.

Lalaji’s attorney, Richard Walter, told the Herald-Leader last year that Lalaji maintained he had always followed the proper standard of care and that he would appeal the suspension.

However, according to the order released this week, Walter told a licensing board hearing officer that Lalaji had said he would not attend a mandatory hearing.

The hearing officer recommended that the council render a finding and order that the allegations against Lalaji were true.

The board approved the recommendation and revoked Lalaji’s license to practice in Kentucky.

He cannot file for reinstatement for two years, after he pays $7,056 to cover the board’s costs in the case.
