Good morning, it is Wednesday, July 24th, 2024, and THIS is your Eye On Annapolis Daily News Brief presented by Annapolis Subaru and the SPCA of Anne Arundel County.

Just a fast update on the APD confidence poll we have running–  with 1305 responses, 84.92% says they do not have confidence in the leadership, 6.23% say they do, and 8.85% say they are unsure. Well, that’s the last of the bad news for today. So, let’s get into it, shall we ?

Yesterday, District 38 State Senator Mary Beth Carozza, in partnership with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA), Maryland Coastal Bays Program, and Chesapeake Bay Trust, revealed an updated design for the Maryland bay license plate. The new design emphasizes the Coastal Bays along with the Chesapeake Bay and it really is not a new design, but they changed the tagline from “Protect the Chesapeake Bay” to “Protect the Chesapeake & Coastal Bays.” Since its introduction in 1990, the bay license plate has been instrumental in funding environmental projects. Currently, 7% of Maryland vehicles feature the bay plate. The “Protect the Chesapeake and Coastal Bays” license plate can be purchased for $20 through various channels, including MDOT MVA branches and online.

Four local students have been awarded scholarships through the annual Dunkin’ Regional Scholarship Program, which provided $125,000 in scholarships to 50 students across Maryland, D.C., and Northern Virginia. Each recipient received a $2,500 scholarship to pursue undergraduate degrees. The local recipients include Ana Hernandez Valcarcel from Annapolis, Savana Gambriel from Millersville, Erin Scott from Odenton, and Cecilia Hartford from Pasadena. They will be honored at an awards ceremony at Nationals Park. Each student has notable achievements, ranging from leadership roles and academic excellence to community service and extracurricular involvement.

Governor Wes Moore signed an executive order to establish the Maryland Plain Language Initiative, aimed at improving communication between the state government and residents. The initiative will standardize clear and accessible communication across all state agencies. It involves a collaboration between the Maryland Department of Information Technology’s Maryland Digital Service, the Maryland Department of Disabilities, and the Governor’s Office of Community Initiatives. The goal is to remove barriers to accessing government services by eliminating technical jargon and ensuring that all written communications are easy to understand. I can get behind this–wheretofor there will be no more government-speak!

Homestead Gardens has introduced a new venue for children’s birthday parties. The venue features a private outdoor area with seasonal decorations, a 30′ x 30′ pavilion tent, reserved parking, and a large jumping pad for children. Additional amenities include picnic tables, food and beverage tables, and an attendant to assist with setup, serving, and cleanup. Children can interact with barnyard animals such as goats, chickens, and cows, and optional activities include pony rides, face painting, and a “Pollinator Express” activity. Guests can bring their own food and beverages, and parties can be rescheduled in case of inclement weather. And the adults, can check out their new Beer Farm!

Up this Saturday on the Local Business Spotlight, we chat with a St. Anne’s School of Annapolis graduate that has started a much needed service in the sports wagering world–Wager Pager! That drops at noon on Saturday!
