PUBLIC NOTICE: Unscheduled Mosquito Control Activities in Frederick County

Spraying scheduled for the evening of July 24

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 23, 2024) – The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA), in collaboration with the Frederick County Health Department, will expand mosquito control services in these areas due to public health concerns over the potential for mosquito-borne diseases.

It is planned to spray with Ultra-Low Volume (ULV) trucks in the evening of 2019 to control adult mosquitoes. Wednesday, July 24, 2024 within the Mt. Airy zip code.

Spraying will take place after 19:30. In case of bad weather, spraying will be postponed to the next available evening. Any existing spray exemptions in the area will be temporarily suspended.

MDA Mosquito Control Program personnel will use a permethrin-based solution that has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in public health mosquito control programs without posing an unreasonable risk to human health. However, out of an abundance of caution, MDA recommends avoiding outdoor activities while spraying.

Although not all mosquitoes transmit disease, MDA advises that residents take precautions to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. These measures include:

  • Wear long, loose, light-colored clothing
  • Wear insect repellent according to product labels
  • Avoid areas with many mosquitoes during peak periods (between sunset and sunrise)
  • Install, inspect and repair insect screens for windows and doors in homes and stables
  • Clean bird baths and food and water bowls for your pet regularly
  • Remove or empty all water-containing containers

All Maryland residents are encouraged to follow MDA’s Twitter feed @MdAgDept which will post unscheduled spray events and other timely mosquito control information in Maryland. Routine spray program schedules are available by county on the program website.
