Florida residents can buy tax-free school supplies starting Monday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Back-to-school shopping season is in full swing in Florida. Starting Monday, families can purchase a variety of back-to-school items tax-free.

This includes clothing, shoes and school bags costing $100 or less, school supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks and other items costing $50 or less, and laptops costing $1,500 or less.

Scott Shalley, head of the Florida Retail Federation, said the 14-day tax holiday is similar in its impact on many businesses to the holiday shopping season.

“It’s a traditional holiday. People look forward to it. They take advantage of it. They seize the opportunity to save. Our retailers are primed for it,” Shalley said. “Our retailers are ready and prepared to have additional offers to drive activity.”

The school holiday was part of a broader tax package that lawmakers and Gov. Ron DeSantis approved this year.

This is expected to save consumers just over $97 million.
