Kanawha County school officials hope to implement plan to keep Calvert Field in use this season

OOSTBANK, W.Va. — Kanawha County school officials say they are confident they can find a solution to allow a local high school football team to use their home field this fall.

Kanawha County Schools Superintendent Tom Williams met with officials at East Bank Middle School this week. The meeting led to plans to mobilize temporary facilities for the team to use as a home base. A temporary locker room and temporary bleachers are expected to be installed at historic Calvert Field.

A spokesperson for the school system told MetroNews on Friday that it hasn’t been finalized yet, but they are checking to see if they can secure temporary equipment to accommodate home games this season. They expect to know more next week.

The decision reverses an earlier plan by the school board to close Calvert Field this year and move East Bank Middle School games to Riverside High School’s Warrior Stadium.

An engineering assessment has indicated that the old concrete stand on East Bank is in disrepair and structurally unsound. There are plans to demolish the stands in September.

Parents and supporters of the school were angry about the original plan and came to a recent school board meeting to express their anger about the idea. Board members directed Williams to work on a solution to the problem and keep them informed.
