Florida Drivers Licenses Are Changing Soon. Here’s What to Expect

TALLAHASSEE, Florida. – According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, changes are coming to Florida driver’s licenses starting July 31.

In a press release, FLHSMV officials announced that the department will implement new legislation that will require driver’s licenses and identification cards to contain at least four randomly generated numbers.

However, officials assured that the formats of driver’s licenses and ID cards will remain the same, with the only difference being the number printed on customers’ licenses.

The change is intended to improve safety and protect residents’ personal information. However, Florida drivers don’t have to do much to see these changes.

“Customers who renew or replace their driver’s license or identification card in person or online will receive a new number,” the press release said. “Those who apply for a first-time driver’s license or identification card will receive a card that meets the new legal requirements.”

Once the new number is assigned, it will not change unless the driver’s last name changes, the FLHSMV said.

If you wish to renew your driver’s license or ID card online and you are eligible, you can do so online through the MyDMV portal.

However, in the following situations customers must still come to the office:

  • A customer used the online convenience service for his last renewal.

  • A customer wants to update his photo.

  • The client changes his/her name using an original or certified court order or marriage certificate.

  • A customer wants to add or remove a designation or has a court order to update their ID.

  • A customer receives a Florida driver’s license or ID card for the first time.

  • The customer is in possession of a truck driving license.

  • The license has the word “TEMPORARY” printed on it.
