PARIS (KSNT) – It’s the opening day of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris!

One of Topeka’s own employees is experiencing every moment in Paris as a volunteer at the Games.

Michael Callaway has arrived safely at the Olympic Village after being one of 766 chosen to volunteer as an escort for the Olympic Games. His role is part of anti-doping, so he will help transport athletes who need to be tested for drugs.

We had the chance to stop by Callaway’s house as he watched the opening ceremony from his window.

“A lot of people were there, and I was disappointed because I wanted to see an opening ceremony and be a part of it,” Callaway said. “And then I started to realize, well, I’m here. Like I said before, you can hear the helicopters. We can see the Eiffel Tower in the background. Every night I wake up at 3 a.m. because they’re rehearsing.”

Callaway has one official day of volunteering behind him, but is looking forward to returning to his regular spot next Monday and continuing this unique experience.
