Joe Lacob Compares Stephen Curry to Tom Brady, Believes PG Will Be a ‘Warrior for Life’

The Golden State Warriors have had star player Steph Curry for 15 seasons, and team owner Joe Lacob believes he’ll stick around for much longer.

According to Tim Kawakami of The Athletic, Lacob said that while he and Curry have not yet discussed the $62.6 million contract extension he is entitled to, he is confident Curry will be “a Warrior for life.”

“We haven’t talked about it. He’s busy right now and he needs to stay busy and focus on that with the Olympics,” Lacob said. “But if he wants to talk about that, that’s up to him. He hasn’t said that at all, but if he wants to, we’ll certainly have that discussion. … Let’s just put it this way, Steph Curry, I fully expect him to be a Warrior for Life. I thought Klay would be, but I was wrong.”

Lacob praised Curry’s long career and compared him to NFL legend Tom Brady.

“And I think Steph … what he’s done for this franchise has been tremendous and our intention is to see him play as long as he wants to play and as long as he can play at the level that he’s been playing at,” Lacob said. “He’s in incredible shape, so I have no reason to believe that he can’t play a lot longer. Maybe he’s Tom Brady.”

At 36 years old, Curry is still playing one of the best basketball games of his career. The two-time MVP averaged 26.4 points, 5.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game last year in 74 games, his most since the 2016-17 season.

It seems unlikely that his numbers will be much different in his 16th season. Even as Curry ages, his game should translate well, since his bread and butter is shooting from long range.

While Curry has plenty of accolades and four championships to his name, his next challenge will be to revitalize a struggling Warriors team. Golden State finished 46-36 last year and missed the playoffs after losing to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament.

The Warriors’ roster took a hit this offseason when Klay Thompson left as a free agent, but the team is looking to move forward without him and get things back on track.

As for Curry’s extension, he will likely begin talks once he completes his participation in the Olympic Games with Team USA in Paris.
