Crews work to extinguish the fire on Crater Road on Maui on July 11.

Maui County officials said Crater Road will be closed for a week starting at 6 a.m. Saturday as a precaution due to the nearby 1,400-acre Upper Kula wildfire.

Crater Road, at mile marker 3, will remain closed until 6 p.m. on Aug. 3. The fire was 80 percent contained by Friday evening.

Parts of Crater Road had been closed since July 10 due to the fire, but reopened on Wednesday.

Maui Fire and Public Safety officials said safety concerns arose after the road reopened, leading to the road closure on Saturday.

Officials said the department expects the work completed during the week-long closure will allow the road to reopen.
