New York’s jobless claims fell last week

The number of jobless claims in New York fell last week compared with the previous week, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

New claims for unemployment benefits, a measure of layoffs, fell to 15,657 in the week ended July 20, from 23,636 the week before, the Labor Department said.

U.S. jobless claims fell to 235,000 last week, down 10,000 from 245,000 claims the previous week, after seasonal adjustment.

Texas saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims increasing by 24.9%. Kansas, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage decrease in new claims, with claims dropping by 68.7%.
