Arrest made in cold case murder of Augusta man Dwayne Lane

Richmond County authorities arrested one person Friday in a five-year-old cold case murder.

Dwayne Lane, 52, of Augusta, was found murdered in his Bayvale Road home after a 911 call on Dec. 30, 2019. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office ruled Lane’s death a homicide after an autopsy.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has arrested Willie Ferrell, 42, for Lane’s murder, according to a news release. Ferrell is currently being held at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. The sheriff’s office did not list Ferrell’s hometown.

“The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division was able to locate and interview original witnesses and new witnesses in connection with the case,” the press release said. The sheriff’s office credited these interviews with the breakthrough in the case.

Lane’s family had offered a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Lane’s death. There was no information in the press release about whether anyone had collected the reward.
