Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has blunt advice for Jordan Love after $220 million contract extension

The Green Bay Packers and franchise quarterback Jordan Love agreed to the richest contract extension in franchise history on Friday night. The deal ends Love’s “hold in,” which was his refusal to participate in practice until his deal was signed. The decision was understandable, of course. The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings have already lost a projected starter on their roster to non-contact injuries.

As it turns out, the Packers and Love were as close to a deal as many thought. Green Bay’s starting quarterback, who was second in the NFL with 32 touchdown passes last season, missed just four non-padded practices. He returns to practice Saturday for the first padded practice of training camp.

The contract that Love and the Packers agreed to is reportedly a four-year deal worth $220 million. It includes a $75 million signing bonus, which is the largest signing bonus in NFL history. This bonus must be paid to Love by December.

It also includes $155 million in guaranteed money, which is significant for the Packers organization. Historically, Green Bay has not guaranteed money after the first year of a contract.

The decision to guarantee Love money beyond this season and into 2025 shows they have every confidence he will be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL for years to come.

Love’s $55 million annual salary is the highest in the NFL (tied with Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals and Trevor Lawrence of the Jacksonville Jaguars).

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has high expectations for Jordan Love

Speaking to the media today, head coach Matt LaFleur expressed how happy he was for his young quarterback. He also had some blunt and realistic advice for Love:

LaFleur then added, “He’s been raised the right way. I always tell him if he changes who he is, I’ll call his mother.”

Love will speak to the media for the first time since signing his new contract after training on Saturday.
