Insider says Phoenix Suns have ‘real chance’ at PG

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns could increase their chances of upgrading the point guard position.

According to Suns insider John Gambadoro, it is a real possibility that Phoenix will bring in free agent Tyus Jones.

“I hear there is a real chance to sign Tyus Jones and that would be a HUGE win for the Suns,” Gambo wrote on Twitter/X.

“Could happen very quickly if Jones is willing to take less money than he could get at some other teams. The Suns’ culture, playing time and chance to win might convince him.”

The Suns — who have already passed the second tranche of the luxury tax — can now only sign players who are free agents and must agree to minimum contracts.

The point guard conversation has been prominent in Phoenix since even before Chris Paul was traded last summer. Frank Vogel attempted to go with a dual backcourt of Bradley Beal and Devin Booker, but that ultimately fell through during the 2023-24 season.

The Suns lost the ball far too often and were eliminated in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Vogel was fired before the Suns quickly brought in Mike Budenholzer as a replacement. Months later, Phoenix signed free agent point guard Monte Morris.

From HoopsRumors:

“Jones’ landing spot has been a hot topic of speculation for several weeks now, as he is easily the highest-ranked unrestricted free agent on our top 50 list who has not yet been signed. The 28-year-old is coming off a season in which he set new career highs in field goal percentage (48.9%), three-point percentage (41.4%), points per game (12.0) and assists per game (7.3) for the Wizards.”

Jones played in all 66 games he played in last season and would undoubtedly fill a large void when it came to finding a capable outfield player.
