Oil spill closes part of Bayou Lafourche; drinking water not at risk • Louisiana Illuminator

A crude oil spill in Bayou Lafourche near Raceland forced officials to close a portion of the waterway to boat traffic Saturday morning so the spill could be contained. Drinking water for communities in the bayou remains safe, Lafourche Parish President Archie Chaisson said.

Emergency responders were notified at 7:50 a.m. of a “potential crude oil spill,” Chaisson said in an emailed statement. They discovered oil entering Bayou Lafourche through a stormwater channel near the intersection of Highway 308 and Highway 182 in Raceland.

The source of the spill is the Crescent Midstream Crude Oil Facility, which Chaisson said is following its approved incident response plan. The source has been secured, the crude oil is now contained and federal, state and local agencies have been notified, the parish chairman said.

Emergency responders are working in and along Bayou Lafourche, from the Highway 182 bridge in Raceland to U.S. Highway 90. Chaisson is asking everyone to please not impede the relief effort or deny emergency responders access to the bayou.

The bayou is closed to mariners from the Highway 182 bridge to the Salt Water Control Structure in Lockport.

Bayou Lafourche supplies drinking water to Assumption, Lafourche, Terrebonne and parts of Ascension parish. The area below the bayou from the spill gets its water supply from the Lockport Water Plant, which serves customers from Highway 182 all the way to Port Fourchon.

Grand Isle, which is accessible only by road through Lafourche, has its own water supply supplied from Jefferson Parish.

Government officials and Crescent Midstream representatives are expected to provide an update on the incident at 4 p.m. Saturday.
