This is how FAMU football performed during the first training with cushions of 2024

Florida A&M had its first padded practice of its 2024 training camp on Saturday. The Rattlers have completed three of their 25 practices for the new season. They have a closed practice on Sunday.

The American football season at Florida A&M has now officially gone physical.

On Saturday, the Rattlers got shoulder pads for their third practice, giving players their first contact during training camp for the 2024 season.

“We took it to the next level because we had a few more battles than normal. That’s normal when the pads come on,” said FAMU head coach James Colzie III.

“We have to make sure we look after each other, and I didn’t see that today. The pads were on. We were a little bit combative. But overall I thought it was a pretty good day.”

The Rattlers last showed their physical prowess in tackle football during their Orange and Green Spring Game.

That was 105 days ago, on April 13th.

FAMU longed to hear the pads tapping against each other.

However, FAMU linebacker Aric Horne, who is expected to start this season, wants the Rattlers to know how to maintain an even keel during practice, regardless of the setbacks or confrontations.

“It felt good to get back in the pads. It’s been a while since spring,” Horne said.

“You know it’s going to get noisy here. It’s about finding our calm.”

On the first day of the pads, Colzie was able to assess his team live in an 11-on-11 situation.

While the Rattlers’ first-year coach was pleased, he knows his first FAMU football team still has room for improvement. There are 22 practices left before the season opener against Norfolk State at the MEAC/SWAC Challenge on Aug. 24 in Atlanta.

“The offensive line and defensive line played pretty well. Our safeties played well,” Colzie said. “Our quarterbacks made some bad decisions at times. They tried to force things.

“Overall, we’ve done some good things. But we’ve also had some bad things.”

FAMU transfer defender Jameel Sanders impressed Colzie on Saturday.

Sanders came to FAMU after stints at Lackawanna College and South Florida.

The redshirt junior Sanders is part of a class of about 50 players, and Colzie says they are making progress.

“Jameel Sanders’ intensity level is up a little bit. He was a little more enthusiastic than he has been the last few days,” Colzie said. “We have a physical group that moves well.”

FAMU football wants to ‘raise the bar’ now that the first training week is over

After three training sessions, the most noticeable improvement at Horne is the sense of community among the Rattlers.

The student expects his team to make steady progress as the training camp progresses.

“Getting all the guys together. Unity,” Horne said. “Just keep piling on days and getting better every day.”

FAMU will hold the fourth of 25 training sessions on Sunday.

The training on Sunday is closed.

“We have to keep raising the bar. It wasn’t our best practice. I’ve seen some good practices over the last two or three years,” Colzie said.

“Today was a good day. But hopefully, once we get the chance to evaluate, we can make some improvements for tomorrow.”
