Chicago Cubs see rumors of transfer target to Boston Red Sox

Even as the July 30 trade deadline passes, it’s still largely a mystery what the Chicago Cubs will do, as they’re already out of the race for the division and several games behind the final Wild Card spot.

It is expected that they will be sold.

That’s something Jed Hoyer and his management always do when they don’t expect to make the playoffs. With a number of attractive players on the roster that teams around the league might want to acquire, the Cubs figured they would be selling.

Instead, they made a surprise deal to acquire a bullpen arm.

Chicago could still trade a number of players from their roster, especially since there are multiple reports that Jameson Taillon is atop the rankings of many teams competing for the title.

Before the Cubs entered this phase of the year, where they will likely focus on next season, the fan base wanted them to trade a catcher, as Miguel Amaya and Yan Gomes were among the worst offensive units in Major League Baseball.

Danny Jansen of the Toronto Blue Jays seemed like an obvious trade target.

Had he been hired, Chicago wouldn’t have had to give up many of its best players to acquire the veteran who had posted an OPS+ above the league average of 100 as a reserve player for three straight seasons.

But according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletics.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports this that three players are returning to the Blue Jays, led by infielder Eddinson Paulino who is ranked as the Red Sox’ No. 22 prospect. The other two are infielder Cutter Coffey and right-handed pitcher Gilberto Batista.

At that point, it wouldn’t have been a great idea for the Cubs to make a deal for a player like Jansen, given their position in the draft, so it’s not really something fans should be upset about.

It may be that the front office didn’t take action sooner, and the package didn’t seem to suggest they would have to give up much, but that’s something they can be criticized for.

Either way, someone who was linked to Chicago as a potential signing has been sent to another team.
