Springfield Families Leave SPS Back to School Bash with Socks, Backpacks, School Supplies and Food

Volunteers from the Springfield Public Schools Back to School Bash handed out thousands of backpacks on Saturday, along with bags full of groceries, stacks of socks and piles of school supplies.

The comprehensive plan, drawn up three years ago, helps students and their parents prepare for the first day of school, which this year falls on August 19.

There were vaccinations, sports checks and hygiene products.

More than 175 volunteers signed up to help with the event at the Springfield Expo Center, which also included community partners Care to Learn, Ozarks Food Harvest and Convoy of Help.

New this year, families could have their picture taken with KC Wolf, the Kansas City Chiefs mascot.
