Sacramento Republic FC Press Release

Sacramento remains the 2024 Road Warriors – the only club in the USL Championship to go unscathed – with a 1-0 victory over Detroit City FC. The third meeting between the two clubs would end in the same fashion as the previous two, with Sacramento taking all the points. A pair of Michiganders would connect in the 84th minute to seal the victory. A great cross from Jared Timmer across the goal to Russell Cicerone would put the Quails on the scoreboard. After missing 11 games due to injury, Cicerone scored 13 minutes into the game. Danny Vitiello was a big hit for the Quails with four saves to secure the club’s 10th clean sheet of the year. Three points put them on 25 points and tied for first place in the Western Conference.

Indomitable Club began the match with relentless pressure. In the first minute of the match, Cristian Parano and Luis Felipe would combine on the right flank for an early chance that would set the tone for the rest of the match. Republic FC nearly broke the deadlock in the 15th minute after a set piece from Portillo nearly ended up in the net.

Detroit would find chances, but the reigning Goalkeeper of the Year continued his stellar 2024 campaign. In the 21st minute, a dangerous cross would find its way to Sacramento’s back post, but Vitiello would deny Maxi Rodriguez to keep the score at 0-0. Before halftime, in a change of pace for the game, Vitiello would come up big again when Elvis Amoh stretched down the right. With Shane Wiedt cutting the corner, Vitiello made a great stop on a slicing shot.

On the other side of the break, Sacramento went all-out for all three points. Nick Ross, who passed the 10,000-minute mark in regular season play in Detroit, nearly found his highest assist of the season when he set up Jack Gurr in the 58th minute. Former Quail Carlos Saldana made a quick save behind his head to keep the deadlock intact. A driving strike from Cristian Parano in the 62nd minute that was headed for the back of the net veered right and just cleared the post.

Adjustments from Mark Briggs in the second half would help seal the result. Conor Donovan came on in the 59th minute, moving Jared Timmer to the right. Russell Cicerone stepped onto the pitch for the first time in nearly three months and immediately got back into the swing of things. The pair would work together in the 84th minute to secure all three points for Republic FC. Timmer fired a dangerous cross over the top of the penalty area, floating to the back post, where Cicerone fought for space to head home the winning header.

The Indomitable Club returns home for a national date on the USL’s Summer of Soccer calendar. Republic FC hosts the reigning regular season champions Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday, August 3, kicking off at 7:00 p.m. PT from Heart Health Park. The match will air on ESPN2, one of the club’s six national broadcasts that run the league. Tickets are available now at SacRepublicFC.com/Tickets.
