Obituary Kathryn Newbrough Steacy – Athens, GA

KATHRYN NEWBROUGH STEACY Kathryn Newbrough Steacy of Athens, Georgia, formerly of Chico, CA, passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2024 after a long battle with lung cancer. Born on November 7, 1946 in Fort Dodge, Iowa to Robert Newbrough and Wilma Schulze Newbrough, she was the second of four children. She is survived by two brothers, Bill (Des Moines & Laos) and Michael (Des Moines) and one sister, Mary (deceased). She grew up in Iowa and graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines, class of 1964. She received her bachelor’s degree from Marycrest College in Davenport, Iowa in 1969, and her master’s degree in social work from California State Univ Sacramento in 1998. After college, she worked for the National Red Cross assigned to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Shortly thereafter, she joined a national company that sent her to Phoenix, Chicago Hts, Omaha, and Laguna Beach, CA. While in California, she met and married James Steacy in Capistrano Beach. They began their marriage in Santa Maria, CA, where she gave birth to her only child, Chad (formerly of Chico, now of Athens, GA). Kathie and her family moved to Chico in 1983. Kathie worked as a hospice social worker and case manager at the Enloe Cancer Center for nearly 25 years. After Jim’s death in 2010, she moved to Athens, GA to be closer to her son Chad. Kathie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister. She is survived by her son Chad (Christine) and granddaughter Sophie Madeleine. She is also survived by her stepchildren Lynda (Jack) of Brentwood, CA and Rob (Robin) of San Jose, and their four children and several grandchildren.
