Kamala Harris Raises $200 Million in Less Than a Week

Kamala Harris’ campaign has raised more than $200 million since President Biden endorsed her on Sunday and ended his own presidential bid. Two-thirds of the vice president’s campaign proceeds have come from first-time donors, according to Harris campaign officials.

The flood of money and Democratic enthusiasm for Harris has reshaped the presidential race since President Biden dropped out a week ago, forcing Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump out of the comfortable position he had held in recent months as polls showed Biden ahead in key swing states. Trump had also begun eyeing opportunities to expand the electoral map, including in states like Minnesota, where he campaigned Saturday night.

Harris campaign officials said they’ve recruited 170,000 new volunteers since Sunday and are holding 2,300 events this weekend to mobilize grassroots supporters. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), who is being heavily considered to be Harris’ running mate, launched a campaign event in Carlisle, Pa., on Saturday, while Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, another potential vice presidential candidate, rallied supporters in St. Paul, Minn., to drum up enthusiasm for Harris’ effort.

Harris quickly cleared the field of serious competition, winning commitments from enough Democratic delegates to secure the nomination Monday night, according to the Associated Press delegate tracker. She’s earned a string of critical endorsements, including from Barack and Michelle Obama. And she’s now in the midst of an intensive search for a running mate — a decision she plans to make before Aug. 7, when the national party plans to nominate a ticket virtually.

The vice president attended a fundraiser in the Berkshires, Massachusetts, on Saturday that was expected to raise $1.4 million for the campaign, according to one of the presenters. She told the crowd that Trump and his allies have resorted to some “wild lies” about her record: “Some of the things he and his running mate say are just crazy,” Harris said with a laugh at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. “That’s the box you put it in.”

A new national poll by the Wall Street Journal found that 49 percent of registered voters supported Trump and 47 percent Harris, within the margin of error. New Fox News polls in swing states showed Trump and Harris tied in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Harris led by six to six points in Minnesota.
