The Boston Red Sox lost a devastating 11-8 loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday night, after being tied five times and giving up runs in the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th innings. In doing so, they squandered late leads, including an 8-7 lead in the ninth inning, with closer Kenley Jansen just one strike away from a second straight series-opening victory.

In retrospect, one player’s embarrassing blunder in the second inning is seen as a major reason for the Sox’ loss.

In the second inning, with no outs, a four-all score, and runners on second and third, Wilyer Abreu hit a standard fly ball to center field. Trent Grisham caught it and threw it back to the infield. Second baseman Gleyber Torres threw the ball to third to catch Ceddanne Rafaela for a double play. Rafaela was standing at third base talking to the third base coach.

To make matters worse, Masataka Yoshida hit an RBI single in the next at bat, scoring Jarren Duran from second base on what should have been a two-run single.

Rafaela’s mistake cost the team a much-needed run. In a game that was tied five times and just one strike away from victory in the ninth inning, many fans point to this blunder as the reason the Sox lost.

Boston continues to make costly mistakes this season with so many young players on the roster. This mistake was unacceptable and unbecoming of Rafaela, who is coming off a strong debut year and is well on his way to winning the Rookie of the Year award.
