Melton’s Gem Leads Erie to Sunday Win

The SeaWolves (56-38) tied the season series against Altoona (40-56) on Sunday with a 5-2 win.

Altoona starter Hunter Barco left due to injury after Jake Holton’s leadoff single in the second inning. Emmanuel Chapman came in and singled Eliezer Alfonzo and walked Ben Malgeri to load the bases. Trei Cruz then had a bases-loaded walk to drive in the game’s first run. Brady Allen made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Carlos Mendoza walked to re-load the bases. Hao-Yu Lee hit a three-run double to make it 5-0.

Troy Melton pitched a gem for Erie. The right-handed pitcher allowed two hits in six scoreless innings. He didn’t give up a hit and struck out a season-high eight.

Kervin Pichardo’s two-run home run in the eighth inning against Matt Seelinger was the lone score for Altoona.

Melton (6-5) deserved the win. Barco (0-1) got the loss. RJ Petit closed his second save.

Erie won five of six games against Altoona this week to earn a season-high tie at 18 games. Garrett Burhenn pitches for Erie in the first game of a six-game series at Hadlock Field against the Portland Sea Dogs on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
