Bo Nix must overcome Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson to become the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback.

If he does, Nix will have the chance to train himself from the devil.

The Broncos will face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the regular season. Nix’s last time in Seattle, his Oregon Ducks lost 36-33 to the Washington Huskies. He completed 75 percent of his passes and threw a touchdown in the contest.

The Nix Ducks also overcame a 29-18 deficit in the third to take a 33-29 lead with less than seven minutes left. But they were stopped at midcourt before the two-minute warning.

Michael Penix Jr. (Atlanta Falcons) led the Huskies to the winning goal.

“I think about that a lot,” Nix said when asked about that game after practice on July 27. “It’s one of those things that, honestly, I hope I never forget because of the things that happened. But, yeah, it’s fitting that I started there this year and that’s where my NFL journey started. And so, we’ll be ready to roll and we’ll go out there with some enthusiasm and hopefully, that doesn’t happen again.”

Stidham has more experience in head coach Sean Payton’s system while Wilson was a higher draft pick, despite being selected by another organization. Nix is the highest-ranked quarterback selected by the Broncos since Jay Cutler in 2006.

However, Nix is not afraid of competition.

Asked if he would accept not being a reserve player for “a year or two”, Nix gave a straightforward answer.

“I don’t know if I have a choice; whether I accept it or not. If I want to stay, I better accept it,” Nix said. “But I also don’t necessarily want to be complacent and say, ‘You know what? This is my rookie year. I’m fine with sitting back, hanging in there and learning.’ I have full confidence and trust in these coaches and this team. They’re going to play me when I’m ready, and I’m going to do my best to be ready.”

“That’s all I can do. But I also think you owe it and respect to the other people who are competing. They want to be the starters too and they have to accept what happens too.”

ESPN’s Jeff Legwold wrote on July 23 that Nix is ”expected” to start.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported positive reviews of Nix after training camp, consistent with reports from the spring.

“People I spoke to around the team didn’t shy away from the notion that Denver felt there was something in Nix,” Fowler wrote on July 28. “Sometimes with rookies, you hear things like, ‘He’s improving’ or ‘Rookies need time.’ Not in this case. It’s a variation on ‘He’s impressive.’”

“The Broncos aren’t naive in assuming Nix will have first-year moments in training camp when the pads are put on. But this is a quarterback made in the image of coach Sean Payton, who is betting big on his ability to develop passers. While the battle is clearly open, Nix is making his case.”

Nix set an NCAA record with 61 appearances for the university.

His accuracy and composure are two reasons he is expected to be a good fit for the Broncos and Payton.

Sean Payton Could Slash Broncos’ QB Competition

“It’s not easy,” Nix said of the ongoing competition. “At the same time, we’re all grown up and we’ve all been here before, we’ve all done it before. And so whatever they decide, that’s what we’re going to do. But we’re all just trying to do our best right now.”

Payton said he thinks the competition at QB will change in the next two weeks.

“The rotation has been pretty consistent. I think that’s going to start to change a little bit as we get into the next week and a half, two weeks,” Payton told reporters on July 27. “We’re in a pretty consistent pattern right now. And I think it’s going to be hard to maintain that throughout training camp.”

It’s unclear which of the three QBs will suffer in that decision, though Nix’s draft status would seem to rule him out of the discussion.
