Trump’s Iowa abortion ban goes into effect today, leaving millions of Midwesterners without care

In response to Iowa’s extreme abortion ban going into effect, DNC spokesperson Stephanie Justice issued the following statement:

“Today marks the first day that women in Iowa have had their lives thrown into chaos by an extreme and cruel abortion ban that outlaws abortions before many women even know they are pregnant – all thanks to Donald Trump. Iowa women now join millions of women across the Midwest who have been victimized by the radical, anti-abortion agendas of MAGA Republicans because of Trump’s role in the downfall of Roe v. Wade, which he still brags about to this day. Along with JD Vance, who wants abortion to be “illegal nationwide,” Trump will do everything he can to take away the fundamental freedoms that women have enjoyed for generations. The fallout from this ban will further devastate the health care systems of Midwestern states, which are already strained by women being forced to travel hundreds of miles to receive even basic care.

“Today is a dark day for Iowa, the Midwest, and the country, and if Trump wins again, it will be a harbinger of things to come for the entire nation. Trump’s Project 2025 will ban abortion nationwide and punish women who seek reproductive care. But this doesn’t have to be our future. Women in Iowa and across the country are fed up and will stand up and vote against Donald Trump and J.D. Vance’s plan to take away our reproductive rights.”

Today—one year after Iowa MAGA Republicans passed one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, outlawing abortions before most women even know they are pregnant—the ban goes into effect. All because Donald Trump Roe v. Wade.

The effects of Trump and MAGA Republicans’ extreme and cruel ban will be felt throughout the Midwest, straining healthcare systems. Trump and MAGA Republicans have created a dire situation where women are forced to flee their home states to access healthcare.

Iowa Public Radio: “The law goes into effect July 29. Planned Parenthood estimates it will block nearly all abortions in the state.

“If that happens, it will likely impact abortion access not only in Iowa, but around the world. entire Midwest region.”

Washington Post: “Reproductive health groups in neighboring states where the procedure remains legal already seeing an influx of patients from IowaThe Chicago Abortion Fund received more than 60 requests for support from Iowa residents during the first three weeks of July, an increase of 165 percent compared to previous months.

It’s even astonishing to me“, Executive Director Megan Jeyifo said Wednesday.

Foxes Illinois: “The reversal of Roe v. Wade led to an increase in out-of-state patients traveling to Illinois for abortions.

“Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri expects an additional 14,000 patients from outside the state in southern Illinois alone, over a period of one year. At this time, there are only two clinics in that regionwhich means people have to wait longer for an appointment.”

The Iowa ban will only increase the strain on health care systems since Donald Trump resigned as president. Roe v. Wade.

CBS News: “The number of people crossing state lines into Minnesota to get an abortion has skyrocketed after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wadenew data shows.

“The number of out-of-state patients increased from 9% in 2020 to 30% in 2023 during the same period, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports abortion rights. Nationally, one in five patients travels out of state for an abortion.”

The news from Detroit:A month later I would say that our biggest surprise actually had to do with how our capacity quickly decreased” , said Bonyen Lee-Gilmore, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman. “Our best guess, before Roe was repealed, was that this would happen over time. Particularly because we knew that abortion wasn’t going to be banned in all states at once. It depends on whether you have trigger laws, pre-Roe bans, and some states have challenged their trigger bans. So we knew that there would be a patchwork and that access would decline. But we thought it would go a little slower than what happened.’”

MLive: “’The number of out-of-state patients we see has tripled,” said Dr. Sarah Wallett, Chief Medical Operating Officer at Planned Parenthood of Michigan. “Where it used to be pretty unusual to see someone who lived out of state, it’s really routine now.”

“‘Every day I’m in the clinic I see someone who has come from out of state.’”

Doctors and health care providers are no longer practicing in states with extreme abortion bans and are speaking out against the dangers of these cruel laws.

KCRG: “Iowa OB/GYN Concerned About Abortion Law Exceptions”

Kaiser Health News: “Doctors in training increasingly avoid states with abortion restrictions

Des Moines Register: “Iowa has a shortage of gynecologists. The new abortion ban could make it even worse.”

The Government Gazette: “Doctors say new law could force them to consider legal and professional consequences when making possible medical decisions that are of vital importance involving pregnant women.

“‘The law will still have a deterrent effect‘ said Dr. Francesca Turner, an obstetrics and gynecology physician in Des Moines and co-founder of the advocacy group Iowans for Health Liberty.

“We trained for decades, and no one wants to lose their license for saving someone’s life”, Turner said. ”I also don’t think that when someone’s life is in danger, I should be pulled over and waste precious seconds wondering whether I’m going to break the law or lose my driver’s license.“”

Iowa’s abortion ban flies in the face of Iowans’ beliefs, with an overwhelming majority of Iowans supporting women’s right to abortion. Now, voters in Iowa and across the Midwest are fighting back, rejecting Donald Trump’s anti-freedom extremism.

Des Moines Register: A majority of Iowa residents believe abortion should be legal in most or all casesaccording to a new poll from the Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa.

“Sixty-one percent of adults in Iowa say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, while 35% say the procedure should be illegal in most or all cases.

“More than two-thirds of women in Iowa, 70%saying that abortion should be legal in most or all cases.”
