Making a splash in the city’s pools this summer is what one neighbor hopes more community members will do.

Find out why the pool here on Dade Street means so much to her and what swimming facilities are available for you and your family.

“This was the premiere, this was the gold mine,” said Shauna Smith, a northwest Tallahassee native, as she described her fond memories of the Robinson Trueblood Pool on Dade Street.

“There were a lot of times when my dad’s car, my parents’ car, was loaded up with kids from the neighborhood, all of whom we wanted to take to the pool,” Smith said.

It is a combination of her memories and the history of the pool that keeps her using it regularly.

“This was one of the first pools that African-American kids could come to,” Smith said.

She wants to share these memories with her neighbors.

“I would like to see more vibrancy in this neighborhood,” Smith said.

The demand for swimming pools was high this summer.

“We saw a huge demand for recreational activities and then also for our normal things like swim lessons and swim teams,” said Leslie Adams, Aquatics Manager for the City of Tallahassee. She said demand has been high at all seven pools since they fully reopened after COVID-19.

Adams said hundreds of people visit the pools every day.

Adams said they want to respond to this demand to create more opportunities for people to swim.

“Next summer we’ll see more of a focus on summer camps in the pools. We’ve opened up a couple of locations for rent for birthday parties and things like that,” Adams said.

The Robinson-Trueblood pool is open during the summer months. Shauna hopes people will put the pool on their to-do list.

“Let the city and the residents know that we have this great facility here,” Smith said.
