Phoenix Suns new signing gets ‘A’ grade

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns pulled off a robbery this past weekend.

The Suns have agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million contract with former Washington Wizards PG Tyus Jones, making him the most valuable acquisition of the offseason.

The 28-year-old Jones has long been regarded as one of the NBA’s top reserve players before starting all 66 games for the Wizards last season.

Jones explained why he decided to sign with the Suns, citing the organizational culture, a guaranteed role, the chance to compete for an NBA title and his belief that the coaching staff can maximize his abilities.

The most interesting thing about this story is how quickly it unfolded and how his role for the upcoming season seems assured.

The positives of bringing in Jones seem endless. This move likely moves Grayson Allen to the bench, which will obviously help with depth concerns.

Jones has the best assist-to-turnover ratio in league history and forms a formidable duo with Monte Morris.

Finally, Jones’ 2023-24 production — 12 PPG, 7 APG and over 40% of his three-pointers made — is a good approximation of what Chris Paul put forth in his final season with the franchise in 2022-23 with the Suns — at a fraction of the cost.

Jones brings a lot of positives that weren’t there before. He’ll be able to calm the offense down when he needs to. He’ll be able to knock down open three-pointers when he needs to. He’ll be able to be an opportunist in the passing lanes.

The longtime court general has been an absolute asset to the Suns, and fans will likely feel much better about him heading into the 2024-25 regular season.
