Red Sox select one reliever, recall another for series opener against Mariners

The Boston Red Sox continue to shuffle their bullpen, with the group struggling over the past month.

On Monday, the team announced that right-handed reliever Greg Weissert has been sent to Triple-A Worcester and right-handed reliever Trey Wingenter has been recalled to the big league club.

Weissert, 29, played in 45 games this year and posted a 4.24 ERA (4.18 FIP) and a 1.436 WHIP. He struck out 47 batters in 46 2/3 innings.

Wingenter, 30, was traded to Boston from the Chicago White Sox earlier this month. He made one appearance for the Red Sox, surrendering three runs in an inning of work, before being sent to Triple-A. In four outings for Worcester, he has allowed just one earned run on four hits and two walks.

Boston needs to continue to work on strengthening their bullpen in the final stages.
